Papadopoulos briefs overseas Cypriots

London, May 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopolos briefed leaders of the Cypriot communities abroad, explaining that the rejection by the Greek Cypriots of a UN proposal for a solution was not a denial of a political settlement.

The discussion between Papadopoulos and overseas Cypriots from Britain, the US, Europe and Australia focused on the need to inform decision-making bodies about the continuing desire of the people of Cyprus to reunite their country.

European Parliament officials visit Cyprus

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- An eleven-member administrative team from the European Parliament concluded today a ten-day tour of Cyprus with a view at promoting next month's elections for the new European Parliament.

Speaking to CNA, Andre de Monter, member of the team, said they had the chance to talk to a large number of Greek Cypriots about recent developments on the island and got the impression that they are ready to justify their negative vote in last month's referendum on a UN-proposed solution plan.

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Tuesday and Wednesday: 11/05/2004 to 12/05/2004 -------------------- Fine and mainly clear. Winds will be southwesterly to westerly, moderate to fresh and the state of sea moderate to rough, on Tuesday but on Wednesday southwesterly light to moderate and the state of sea slight to moderate.

Temperature will range from 14C to 28C inland and 15C to 25C over coastal areas on Tuesday and from 12C to 26C inland and 13C to 24C over coastal areas on Wednesday.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 13/05/2004 to 14/05/2004 ------------------------------ No significant change. The temperature is expected to increase a couple of degrees.

British MPs advocate more talks on Cyprus to reach settlement

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- There is a need to reflect and resume talks with a view at reaching a political settlement in Cyprus, following the failure of the latest UN effort to achieve a solution, British members of Parliament have said in speeches at a special anniversary dinner to mark 70 years since the establishment of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood.

All speakers stressed that the negative vote of the Greek Cypriots in last month's referendum on a UN-proposed solution plan should be respected and said that no vindictive moves should be made towards them.

Minister: government will decide on penalties relating to crossings

Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- The government of the Republic has the exclusive right to decide on possible penalties it may impose on persons entering the country through closed ports and airports in Turkish occupied Cyprus, George Lilikas, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, said here today.

Speaking after a meeting on a European Union Regulation on crossings of the Green Line, he said the government would comply fully with its commitments as these are outlined in the Regulation that governs the crossing of goods, persons and services to and from the island's Turkish occupied north.

Cyprus President: Authorities to decide on measures against EU citizens

Larnaca, May 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government does not wish to impose penalties on persons entering the country through the closed ports and airports in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus, President Tassos Papadopoulos has said here Monday, adding that if such an issue arises, it would be political and should be decided by the relevant authorities.

Speaking on his return from Britain where he attended a dinner to mark the 70th anniversary of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood, President Papadopoulos said that the view conveyed to him by his interlocutors was whether the latest negotiations process for a Cyprus settlement followed by the UN was the appropriate one.
