Acting President: EU accession does not replace goal for solution

Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President and Acting President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has sent an optimistic message for the reunification of the island in a bizonal bicommunal federation, stressing that the accession of Cyprus to the European Union does not in any way replace the strategic goal for a political settlement.

In his address at a special ceremony to mark Europe Day today, Christofias also said that small EU member states such as Cyprus had no illusions as to their political clout in an enlarged Europe but did want to be treated on a equal par with larger and more powerful members.

The head of the European Commission Representation Ambassador Adriaan van der Meer said the EU would work very hard to take the Turkish Cypriot community out of its isolation, having in mind the basic principle that the two communities should work together and strengthen European values.

Papadopoulos points to need for changes on Annan plan

    by Kyriakos Tsioupras

London, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that a small number of amendments must be sought with regard to a UN-proposed solution plan to address the concerns of Greek Cypriots, adding that he would spare no effort to achieve a political settlement.

"Plans such as the Annan plan do not fade away. We must insist on bringing about a small number of changes to the plan which would render it acceptable and which would meet the concerns of the Greek Cypriots," he said to Cypriots living in Britain at a special event to mark 70 years since the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood was established.
