    UN top envoy on Cyprus arrives Tuesday for resumption of talks

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special envoy on Cyprus, arrives here Tuesday ahead of the start of intensive negotiations on Thursday to find a negotiated settlement, having had contacts in Dublin and Brussels.

    De Soto is currently in Ireland, which holds the rotating European Union presidency, to talk to senior government officials who deal with the question of Cyprus.

    John Paul Kavanaugh, who has served in the past in Cyprus as a senior UN political adviser, is currently at the Irish foreign ministry as deputy political director and has recently visited the island.

    Following his consultations in Dublin, de Soto will fly on to Brussels where he is due to meet EU Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen, who is also heading to Cyprus on Wednesday, a day before the peace talks resume.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 16/02/2004 to 17/02/2004 --------------------

    Some cloudiness and localized showers are expected, as well as isolated thunderstorms. On the highest peaks of Troodos mountain there will be snowfall on Tuesday. Winds will be light, variable, 3-4 BF.

    Temperature on Tuesday will be around 14C inland, 16C on the coast and 5 C on the higher mountain regions, with slightly lower temperatures on Wednesday. The sea state will be slight to moderate.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 18/02/2004 to 19/02/2004 ------------------------------ On Thursday there will be improvement in the weather conditions, with a moderate probability of rainfall in some areas during the morning.

    On Friday the weather will be good, with transient cloudiness and further warming of temperatures.

    Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- France has welcomed the resumption of negotiations this week with a view at finding a political settlement by May 1 this year, when Cyprus will join the European Union, a spokesman for the foreign ministry has said.

    Athens, Feb 16 (CNA) -- A political settlement in Cyprus is now closer than it has ever been in the past, Greece's new Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis said here today, as he assumed his post.

    Handing over to his successor, George Papandreou said a solution in the coming weeks or months would be a ''moment of historic change'' that would allow Greece to have new goals.
