    Brussels, Feb 16 (CNA) The Green/EFA Group in the European Parliament today welcomed the breakthrough in negotiations on the reunification of Cyprus reached under the auspices of UN General Secretary Kofi Annan.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- ''Now is the time for Cyprus political leaders to seize the opportunities so that a united island can join the EU on 1 May and share in the benefits of EU membership'', EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Taxation Frits Bolkestein said here yesterday.

    Speaking during a gathering on ''Making the Most of the Internal Market after Enlargement'', Bolkestein said that over the coming weeks the worlds attention will be focussed on Cyprus and urged ''all parties concerned to do their utmost to engage constructively in the talks now underway under the aegis of the United Nations Secretary General so that a united island can join the EU on 1 May.''

    UN top envoy on Cyprus meets top EU officials

    Brussels, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's special envoy on Cyprus, continues meetings with top European officials en route from New York to Cyprus where intensive negotiations on the re-unification of the island are due to resume on Thursday, 19 February.

    Today he will hold meetings today in Brussels with enlargement commissioner Guenter Verheugen and Director of the office of EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana. Yesterday he held talks in Dublin with Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern whose country holds the rotating EU presidency.

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus Labour and Social Insurance Minister Iakovos Keravnos announced here today the six Cypriot representatives to the European Economic and Social Committee, whose term in office will expire in 2006.

    ''I believe they will contribute in a decisive manner to building a solid bridge between the EU and civil society in Cyprus,'' the minister said, adding that the appointments prove the government's adherence to EU institutions and the acquis communautaire.

    Papandreou to keep in touch with Annan on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 17 (CNA) - Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece and newly-elected President of socialist PASOK movement George Papandreou revealed here today that he spoke over the telephone with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who asked him to keep in touch and noted that he was ready to contribute substantively to efforts to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after a meeting in Nicosia with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, Papandreou said the fundamental principles of the EU were the same for each country, noting that it was positive that the EU was involved in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.
