    UN Chief expresses regret over failure to reach Cyprus settlement

    United Nations, Sep 16 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed regret that the Cyprus problem despite his intensive exercise of his good offices, remains unresolved.

    However, he stresses that he would resume active efforts to resolve this longstanding problem provided that the parties concerned would demonstarte their commitlement to a settlement based on his peace plan.

    The UN chief notes that a settlement before the entry into force of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004 would still allow a reunited Cyprus to accede to the European Union.

    Nicosia Sep 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou leaves tomorrow for Frankfurt, to take part in the General Assembly of the European Central Bank, due to take place on Thursday.

    Central Bank Governors of the ten EU acceding countries take part at the meetings, having the observer status, until their countries become full members of the EU on May 1, 2004.

    Athens and Nicosia reiterate commitment to UN process

    Athens, Sep 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Greece reiterated here today their commitment to the UN procedure for a Cyprus solution.

    The joint position was expressed after talks in the Greek capital between Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Simitis told the press that the two governments have common views on the peace procedure and the completion of the islands accession to the EU process.

    The Greek Premier announced Papadopoulos will pay an official visit to Greece in autumn, at the invitation extended to him earlier today by Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos.

    Simitis said the main aim remains to secure a viable solution (to the Cyprus problem, which will be fair and functional, based on the UN decisions and the acquis communautaire (EU laws.

    The Prime Minister said the UN General Assembly meeting this month in New York would be a chance to project the positions of the two countries.

    Elections in north will determine developments, says Simitis

    Athens, Sep 16 (CNA) The result of the so called elections in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus will be decisive as far as developments on Cyprus problem are concerned, said here Tuesday Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, adding however that the governments of Cyprus and Greece are working on what exists today which is the negative stance of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot side.

    He was speaking during a press conference with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos who spoke of a positive response from overseas as regards to a Cyprus settlement, in efforts by Cyprus and Greece to promote a solution.
