We have similar problems'', he said. Referring to bilateral cooperation in the economic field, Fernando noted that ''we have about 15,000 workers'' in Cyprus, adding that this cooperation could ''expand'' by bringing ''a large number of professionals'' to the island, ''apart from the unskilled workers and household assistants''. Fernando congratulated Iacovou on Cyprus' accession to the EU. ''We are very happy, as an old friend of yours, that you are finding new friends but I am sure that you will not forget your old friends'', he said. Speaking after a meeting with President of KS EDEK Yiannakis Omirou, Ayala also said that he would encourage a dialogue between its member in Cyprus and any other Cypriot political party that would wish to join the ranks of the Socialist International. Ayala, who also met with honorary President of KS EDEK Vassos Lyssarides, said ''Cyprus now is part of the Europe that we, the Social Democrats, are building together, the Europe that puts people first, the Europe that is open, is inclusive, fair and democratic''. ''So, in this historical time of the transformation we are going through, we have a new hope, that the Cyprus issue will be resolved'', he added. Ayala said ''we have been able to put people together, to integrate peoples, to face the new challenges of the world and it is fair and right that the Cyprus people should have that ambition, that in these new times we can once and for all face the problems on the table and solve them, so that we can see in the future a united Cyprus''. ''We, the Social Democratic family, are ready to stand together with our member and with all the Cyprus people. In this task, we want to be a useful platform for exchange of ideas and discussions but we also want to be an actor behind those political forces and people who stand for these shared values and principles that are represented in the Socialist International'', he said. Replying to a question regarding the Democratic Party and the role it may play in the Socialist International, Ayala said ''our member party in Cyprus is ready to undertake a dialogue with the political forces that might be merging or moving in the direction of a shared platform or values''. ''So, I would encourage this. I think it is a good development when people come together around the same common values and principles'', he added. Omirou said KS EDEK, which is a member of the Socialist International, ''will have a say'' in the matter and noted that the Socialist International would advise any party interested in joining its ranks to enter a dialogue with the member party. He also said KS EDEK would attend the congress of the Socialist International, to be held in October in Sao Paolo. Speaking after his meeting with Ayala, Lyssarides said ''Socialism is incompatible with occupation, incompatible with division and national cleansing, incompatible with the violation of human rights and incompatible with the repression of national rights''. Lyssarides said that ''from the very beginning, the Socialist International had crystal clear views on the Cyprus problem'' and so ''it was natural that the views of our Movement were reflected fully in Socialist International decisions''.
