Turkish effort to remove Cyprus issues from PACE agenda fail

    By Maria Koniotou

Strasbourg, Jun 23 (CNA) Turkish efforts at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to secure a postponement of the debate of two reports on the rights and fundamental freedoms of the enclaved in the occupied areas of Cyprus and on the illegal settlement of the Turkish occupied areas by Turkish settlers, failed and the issues will be debated during the session on Tuesday.

British MP Tom Cox opposed the argument of the Turkish head of delegation that the issues be referred to the autumn session of PACE, noting that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is to blame for the lack of progress during the UN-led peace talks.

A total of 53 deputies voted in favour of deleting the two issues from the agenda sending them back to the committees and 97 against.

In the context of the summer session, the Assembly will vote on a draft recommendation by Finnish MP Jaakko Laakso, Rapporteur on the illegal settlement of the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus by Turkish settlers.
