Talks could be concluded by March next year, says President

Larnaca, Jun 22 (CNA) -- President Tassos Papadopoulos believes that negotiations on the basis of a UN peace proposal could be concluded by March next year, to enable the European Union to adjust the Accession Treaty accordingly.

In statements on his return from Salonica, where he participated in the EU summit, he described as ''totally unfounded'' the terms Turkey lays down for paying compensation to a Greek Cypriot in a case of human rights violation.

The President reiterated his readiness to begin talks as soon as the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan invites the two sides in Cyprus to resume negotiations. Talks broke down in March this year because the Turkish side refused to cooperate with the UN on the Annan plan for a comprehensive settlement.

Papadopoulos said the paragraph on Cyprus in the conclusions of the EU summit is ''very positive and very strong.''
