Cyprus Rally second leg begins, Gronholm in the lead

Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) The second leg of the 31st Cyprus Rally began at 06.00, at the new Port of the southern coastal town of Limassol.

Finnish Marcus Gronholm driving a Peugeot 206 WRC is leading the race, followed by his compatriot Harri Rovanpera also in a Peugeot 206 WRC. Norwegian Petter Solberg in a Subaru Impreza WRC is in third place.

Cypriot delegation to participate in PACE Summer Session

Nicosia, Jun 21 (CNA) - A Cypriot parliamentary delegation leaves tomorrow for Strasbourg to participate in the deleberations of the 3rd Part of the 2003 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, that will take place between 23 and 27 June.

In the context of the Session, the Assembly will vote on a draft recommendation by Finnish MP Jaakko Laakso, Rapporteur on the illegal settlement of the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus by Turkish settlers.

Spokesman says Turkish policy proves unreliable

Porto Carras, Jun 21 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that ''Turkey's policy has been proven once more unreliable''. He was commenting on statements by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gul that Ankara would pay compensation to Greek Cypriot Titina Loizidou for loss of use of her property in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic only under certain conditions.

Speaking in Porto Carras, Chrysostomides said ''the intentional misleading of Europe by Turkey is obvious'', adding that the European Court of Human Rights, the Council of Europe and the European Union should note the new Turkish affront to the intelligence of the international community.

Solberg in the lead of the Cyprus Rally

Nicosia Jun 21 (CNA) -- Norwegian Petter Solberg, driving a Subaru Impreza WRC, leads the race in the Cyprus Rally, after the conclusion of the eighth special stage.

Solberg is followed closely by Finnish Harri Rovanpera in a Peugeot 206 WRC. Rovanpera came first at two of this mornings special stages and is only 10.3 seconds behind leading Solberg.

Bush: US remains committed to finding a Cyprus settlement

Nicosia Jun 21 (CNA) US President George Bush expressed his governments commitment to finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, as stated in a letter accompanying his bimonthly report on Cyprus, sent yesterday to Congress.

''The United States remains committed to finding a just and lasting settlement for Cyprus. Serious efforts continued during this reporting period to persuade the two sides on Cyprus to resume negotiations under the auspices of the UN Good Offices Mission for Cyprus on the basis of the UN SG Kofi Annans proposed settlement plan'', Bush states in his letter.
