Government satisfied with EU decisions on Cyprus

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Porto Carras, Jun 20 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos expressed today the satisfaction of the government over the paragraph on Cyprus included in the Salonica European Councils conclusions, noting that all the points the government wanted were included in the text without any objections.

Speaking late this afternoon at a press conference in Porto Carras, venue of the summit, President Papadopoulos said the European Councils decision on the Cyprus problem was «one of the measures to exert pressure on Turkey to help towards a Cyprus settlement» and noted that it was a «myth» that Turkey and the Turkish occupation regime on the island had changed their stance.

President Papadopoulos said «the paragraph on Cyprus has been approved as it was and includes all the points we had pursued to be included», that is the call for the continuation of the dialogue under UN auspices and for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership in particular to assist efforts to reach a settlement, as well as the mentioning of the fact that the measures promoting contacts between the two communities do not constitute a solution.

«Generally the paragraph is satisfactory for us and has been approved unanimously», he said, noting that there were «no objections» on that part of the text.
