Cyprus Representative addresses UN General Assembly

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Oct 17 (CNA) -- ''Though progress had been made on a number of questions, there were still many long-standing problems, including the question of Cyprus, that remained unresolved, due primarily to the lack of political will and the refusal to implement mandatory resolutions and decisions taken by the Council.''

    Sweden backs Cyprus' EU membership

Nicosia, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh has said her government insists on the European Union decision that a political settlement in Cyprus would facilitate the country's accession but it is not a precondition for it.

Lindh also said that Turkey cannot begin membership talks with the EU until it meets fully the Copenhagen criteria.

The minister outlined these positions in reply to questions by ministry officers following the publication by the European Commission of a progress report on Cyprus' accession course last week.

Asked what would happen to Cyprus' application for accession if there is no political solution, she said that the UN is conducting peace talks between the two parties (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities).

Rights of enclaved children raised before UN General Assembly

    By Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Oct 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Representative at the General Assembly Third Committee, Penelope Erotocritou, pointed out that Greek Cypriot children living in the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus are faced with the hard choice to leave their families once they complete elementary school to attend secondary education in the government-controlled areas.

In her address before the committee's special session on children, Erotocritou said the only other choice they have, is to stay with their families and be deprived of education. This is a very hard choice that children should not be forced to make.

Clerides: UN direct talks to resume after November 15

Larnaca, Oct 17 (CNA) President Glafcos Clerides has said that the UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser, Alvaro de Soto, did not convey anything new to him from his discussions in Ankara, adding that due to health problems Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is facing, the UN-led direct talks are unlikely to resume before November 15.

In statements before his departure to Athens for talks with the Greek leadership, Clerides said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has not yet decided whether he would put forward a solution plan to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides.
