    Ruling party bureau backs socialdemocrat presidential candidate

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- The political bureau of the ruling rightwing Democratic Rally party (DISI) decided last night by an overwhelming majority to propose to the party's highest authority body to back the candidacy of Socialdemocrat leader Yiannakis Omirou for next year's presidential elections.

    Announcing the decision, party spokesman Tasos Mitsopoulos said the bureau is also proposing to the party Supreme Council to monitor developments jointly with Omirou in the Cyprus question and the country's accession course for European Union membership and be ready to take the necessary decisions, if dramatic developments occur.

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) has denounced and condemned as a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law, human rights and the freedoms of the press and of journalists, the expulsion of Spanish journalists who were meeting their Turkish Cypriot colleagues in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic on Monday.

    Cost of Turkish invasion amounts 6.8 billion pounds

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - The accumulated cost of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus amounts to 6.8 billion Cyprus pounds, a study conducted by the Department of Economics of the University of Cyprus on ''The Cost of Turkish Invasion and Measures for its Equitable Distribution'', says.

    The study, which was presented last night during a gathering organised by the Central Agency for Equal Distribution of Burdens, was conducted with the econometric and accounting approach and notes that until the year 2000, the accumulated cost for the displaced and adversely affected persons rose to four billion pounds, ''an amount which is impossible to be covered by the current state expenditure, without endangering the fiscal stability and the economy's development''.

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) - Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis said here today that Cyprus would be able to strengthen its position as the most important services centre in the Eastern Mediterranean with a sustained adjustment to the latest technology.

    In his address during the opening of OFFITEC 2002, a five-day exhibition specialised in office equipment and technology, Rolandis said that Cyprus, with its high standard of living, its impressive record in the tourism and services industries and its light export industry, will naturally follow the unique pace of technology.
