    Greek premier expects "positive report" on Cyprus from EU

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has said he expects the European Union in October to issue a favourable report on Cyprus' accession.

    Britain wants united Cyprus to join EU

    London, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Britain believes that in spite of many difficulties it is possible to find a political solution to the Cyprus problem so that a united Cyprus will accede to the European Union and it will do what it can towards that direction.

    The Foreign Office official spokesman told CNA that Bretain's special envoy for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, will be visiting Cyprus on 30 August, hoping that he will help in creating the climate for a fruitful meeting between UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, on 6 September in Paris.

    Overseas Cypriot leaders to meet August 26-29

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Overseas Cypriot leaders will hold a conference here August 26-29 to discuss among others developments in the Cyprus issue and Cyprus' bid to join the EU. The First International Conference of Cyprus Youth Overseas will also take place.

    Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will open Monday the deliberations of the conference of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA).

    Fire caused helicopter crash killing five army officers

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- A fire caused the helicopter crash that killed on 10 July 2002 National Guard Commander Evangelos Florakis and other four officers, Cyprus Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos announced here today. He said the cause of the fire could not be identified.

    Hasikos told a press conference that investigations carried out by a special committee did not come up with any evidence of human mistake or sabotage, adding that the three possible causes of the fire were fuel leakage, short circuit or overheating at the fuel pumps system.

    The other four officers killed were Cyprus Air Force Commander Stelios Demenagas, Lieutenant Nikos Georgiou, Flight Lieutenant Paris Athanasiades and Flank Officer Michalis Shiakallis.

    London, Aug 23 (CNA)- Britain supports a settlement in Cyprus which would estsablish a bicommunal, bizonal federation in Cyprus, British Minister for Europe Peter Hain has said.

    Hain stressed in a letter he recently sent to British MP Chris Smith that "for a settlement to be viable, the new Cyprus would need to be able to speak with one voice internationally, to meet its full range of international obligations (including implementation of the EU acquis), and to have a single international legal personality".
