    US continues to support UN efforts for Cyprus settlement

    Washington, Aug 22 (CNA) -- The United States remains committed to the United Nations effort to find a just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem, US President George Bush stressed in his report on the Cyprus question to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, covering the period June 1, 2002 through July 31, 2002.

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 23/8/2002 to 14/08/2002

    The weather will be mainly fine with some inland patchy cloud in the afternoon. The winds will be fresh southnewesterly. Temperatures will range from 20 to 35 inland and from 21 to 33 on the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 25/8/2002 to 26/8/2002

    Generally fine with fresh sea breezes. Temperatures will rise slightly.

    Cyprus pursues to be included in China's tourist destinations

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) -- The Chinese government is examining, at Cyprus request, the inclusion of Cyprus in the tourist destinations list published for Chinese citizens, Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Commerce Minister Nicos Rolandis told the press after meeting here Chinese Ambassador in Nicosia Song Aiguo.

    Clerides responds to Afrika appeal

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides responded today to an appeal by the Turkish Cypriot daily "Afrika" (formerly Avrupa", which had called on him to speak out and verify what the newspaper reported, quoting Clerides' memoirs, about how he had helped the family of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to leave the island during the bicommunal clashes in December 1963.

    "I wish to reiterate once more everything relevant included in my book 'My deposition' and which I verified to the journalists of 'Avrupa' when they visited me some time ago in my office: During the bicommunal clashes in December 1963, I responded to a request by Mr. Denktash and facilitated the departure of his wife and children from Cyprus to Ankara, transferring them with my car from Nicosia's Turkish Cypriot sector to the Nicosia International Airport," Clerides said in a written statement.

    Clerides was at that time President of the House of Representatives.

    Cyprus pledges to stop trapping of small birds

    Nicosia, Aug 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus assured today officials of the "Birdlife International", currently visiting Cyprus, that it would intensify its campaign to put an end to the illegal trapping of small birds (ambelopoulia).

    Five "Birdlife" officials met here today with the Head of the Game and Fauna Fund, Pantelis Hadjigeros, who said that bird trapping is prohibited in Cyprus since 1974 and has nothing to do with legal hunting.
