    Coastal police arrest illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Aug 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus coastal police arrested last night 11 illegal immigrants aboard a Syrian boat sailing within Cyprus territorial waters.

    A police spokesman told CNA that the vessel was spotted at 10.50 local time (07.50 GMT) last night by a coastguard patrol boat, approximately three nautical miles off the island's southeastern shores.

    Cyprus - Turkey drawn to play in European Handball Championship

    Nicosia, Aug 21 (CNA) -- The men's national handball teams of Cyprus and Turkey have been drawn to play against each other in the qualifying round of the European Handball Championship.

    The games between the two national teams are set for early January next year, the first to be played in Turkey and the second in Cyprus.

    A Cypriot women's handball team have also been drawn to play against a Turkish team for the European Cup.

    Cyprus willing to help Nigerian unmarried pregnant student

    Nicosia, Aug 21 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government said today it was ready to help a pregnant Nigerian student, who filed an application for political asylum, scared about the death penalty she could face if she returned to her country as she is expecting a child out of wedlock.

    "The government will find ways to protect this 21 year old Nigerian mother, in Cyprus", Interior Minister Andreas Panayiotou told reporters.

    He said the government would examine the case of the Abanda Fatimo, seven months pregnant, from a humanitarian point of view.

    EU Danish presidency reiterates adherence to Helsinki decisions

    Nicosia, Aug 21 (CNA) -- The current president of the European Council Danish premier Anders Fogh Rassmussen has said his country continues to back the EU decision that a political settlement in Cyprus would facilitate accession but it is not a precondition.
