Cox sees chance for Cyprus settlement before EU enlargement

Larnaca, May 8 (CNA) -- President of the European Parliament Pat Cox arrived in Cyprus today for a three-day official visit, saying he hoped there was still a chance for the island to seize the opportunity and accede to the EU reunited.

Speaking on his arrival at Larnaca Airport, Cox said "it is no accident that I come to Cyprus precisely at this moment", noting that "the (accession) negotiations on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus have been the most advanced of all of the candidate states and so we are approaching a very decisive moment".

Turkey deplored for violating Cyprus' airspace

Larnaca, May 8 (CNA) - The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the European Organisation for Aeronautical Security (Eurocontrol) "are making efforts towards a joint meeting between the civil aviation services of Cyprus and Turkey, to discuss any alterations in the present status of the airport of Tympou", used illegally by the Turkish occupation regime.

Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou said today, after inaugurating the new Control Tower at Larnaca Airport, said international organisations deplore the violation of Cyprus' airspace by Turkish fighter jets and that the situation was troubling Cyprus, Europe, the international community, ICAO and Eurocontrol.
