    Cyprus calls for political dialogue on Middle East

    United Nations, May 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus believes that political negotiations are needed to help resolve the Middle East conflict and called on Israel and the Palestinians to find the necessary political courage to achieve peace.

    In his address to the General Assembly Tenth Emergency special session, on the situation in the Middle East, the Republic's charge d'affaires George Kasoulides, expressed full support for the efforts of the Quartet (UN, EU, Russia and US) to end the violence and stressed the need to find a solution based on Security Council resolutions 242 and 338.

    UN Secretary General to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will arrive in Cyprus on 14 May for a three-day visit.

    CNA has learned that Annan will hold separate meetings on 15 May with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Later on he will hold a joint meeting with the leaders of the two communities on the island and have dinner with them at the residence of Deputy Special Representative in Cyprus Sbigniew Wlosowisz.

    Christodoulou sets priorities in new duties

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) - The new Central Bank of Cyprus Governor, Christodoulos Christodoulou said he would give special emphasis to maintaining monetary stability, meeting the deadlines for harmonisation with the acquis communautaire, and the continuing effort for the smooth operation and development of the banking system.

    Christodoulou assumed office during a special ceremony today from his predecessor Afxentis Afxentiou who has retired. Present were the Bank's board of directors and staff.

    Spokesman:Turkish Cypriot proposal not in line with UN resolutions

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- A Turkish Cypriot proposal on a prospective solution of the Cyprus question, submitted at the ongoing UN peace talks, is not based on UN resolutions, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has said.

    He also said that the Turkish Cypriot approach in this proposal is not at all in line with constitutions of countries it quotes, including Canada and the US.

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Italian Minister of Communities Policy and Integration Rocco Buttiglione has said Italy and Cyprus should demand from other EU partners "to support one part of the costs" the two countries take in order to combat illegal immigration.

    Buttiglione, who wrapped up today his two-day official visit to Cyprus, said after meeting Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias that many of the illegal immigrants stranded on the Italian coast want to go to other European countries such as Germany, France and Denmark, adding that "we control this immigration not only for ourselves but also for the other countries."

    Christofias says there are ways to bend Turkish intransigence

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias said here today that there were many ways the UN and the international community could bend Turkish intransigence on Cyprus.

    Replying to a question on the paper submitted by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash at the UN-led direct talks between Denktash and Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Christofias said this paper had nothing to do with a creative position or a contribution to the talks.
