    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Andreas Panayiotou, former Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, is Cyprus' new Interior Minister, appointed today by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    Pat Cox: there is a compelling political deadline this year

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament, has called on all the parties involved in the Cyprus question to seize the moment, noting that this is the year of "compelling deadlines."

    He said that the optimum successful outcome would be a Cyprus with a comprehensive settlement joining the European Union, and commended President Glafcos Clerides for his "consistent commitment" to make headway towards this goal.

    President Clerides, who received today Cox who is on a working visit here, assured him that he would continue to work for a solution to enable all Cypriots to enjoy the political and economic benefits of accession as from 2004.

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 10/05/2002 to 11/05/2002

    Weather: On Friday the weather will be mainly fine with patchy cloud at first becoming later partly cloudy with isolated showers or thunderstroms especially inland and over mountains. On Saturday the weather will be mainly fine.

    Wind: NE'ly to SE'ly gentle to moderate during the day. NE'ly to NW'ly gentle during the night.

    State of Sea: Slight during the day becoming smooth to slight overnight.

    Temperature: Maximum temperature 28 Celcius inland, 26 over south coast and 23 over west coast. Minimum temperature 12 Celcius inland and 14 over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 12/05/2002 to 13/05/2002

    Weather: On Sunday the weather will be fine and mainly clear, but on Monday the weather will be partly cloudy at times with probability of isolated thundery showers.

    House President urges Europe to take more active role

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias has called on Europe to become more engaged in the Cyprus peace effort and urged the permanent members of the UN Security Council to help overcome the obstacles raised by Turkey to a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus question.

    Christofias was addressing here this afternoon European Parliament President Pat Cox, during a special plenary session of the 56-seat Parliament, in the presence of Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, ministers, other officials and foreign diplomats.

    Christofias reiterated Cyprus' adherence to European values and the vision of a united and strong Europe, which should never stop its effort to boost democratic principles through effective participation of its citizens.

    "Our message on this auspicious Day of Europe is that together we shall build the Europe of tomorrow, in the vanguard of efforts to create a better and a more peaceful world," Christofias said, noting that all Cypriots, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, look to Europe as "a beacon of civilisation."

    Åuropean Parliament President sends message of reconciliation

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- President of the European Parliament Pat Cox has sent out a message of reconciliation which is "especially timely" as the ongoing UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus were taking place, expressing the desire for achieving a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

    In statements after meeting here this afternoon Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias, Cox said he was to speak in the Parliament later today and send the message of Shumann Day "to mark and recall the European ideal based on reconciliation."

    He said he has invited "once again" Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides to visit Israel, expressing the hope that the visit would take place "the soonest possible."

    Cyprus' accession to guarantee security for all its people

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- "Cyprus' accession to the European Union will guarantee to the whole of the island's population a secure, peaceful and prosperous future and the chance to take part, on an equal footing, in shaping the Europe of tomorrow," Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here tonight, adding that the island aspires to join the EU as soon as possible.

    Addressing a reception on the occasion of the celebration of Europe Day and in honour of European Parliament President Pat Cox, President Clerides said Cox's presence in Cyprus on this day "is the expression of the constant and unfailing support and assistance of the European Parliament to Cyprus' march towards joining the Union."
