    WRC Drivers consider Cyprus Rally a challenge

    Limassol, Apr 18 (CNA) Despite the low weather temperatures on the island the Cyprus Rally 2002 is still a challenge and durability is still a factor, drivers and team directors said here today, expressing hope for the best possible result they can manage during the three-day Rally which begins tomorrow at the southern coastal town of Limassol. The Rally is included for the third consecutive year in the FIA World Championship.

    Rolandis discusses high technology in India

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Nicos Rolandis, has briefed Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the current situation of the Cyprus problem, the island's European Union accession course and the prospects for cooperation between Cyprus and India in the high technology sector.

    Rolandis, who is on an official visit to India, at the invitation of the country's Communications and Information Minister Pramod Mahajan, repeated an invitation by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides for the Prime Minister to visit the island. Vajpayee said he looked forward to visiting Cyprus.

    Vajpayee's visit was scheduled for September 2001 but was postponed due to the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States.

    60 cars to start at Cyprus Rally first leg

    Limassol, Apr 18 (CNA) -- An overall of 60 cars will start at tomorrows first leg of the Cyprus Rally 2002, which for the third consecutive year is included in the World Championship.

    The first car to start is Marcus Gronholms Peugeot, currently in the lead of the Championship, followed by Gilles Panizzi and Richard Burns, both also Peugeot drivers.

    First priority drivers will start with three minutes intervals while all the other drivers will start with two minutes intervals.

    Christofias says US to help solve Cyprus problem

    Washington, Apr 18 (CNA) - Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias told CNA that the US officials he met with during his visit to the United States, promised to step up efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Christofias noted, however, that he did not expect that his visit to the US would change America's stance regarding Turkey. "What I expect is that they will hear us and finally take us into consideration, and that some moves will be made in this direction", he said, adding that "promises were made but they need to be followed up".

    The House President, who left Washington for London today, said he would be returning to Cyprus satisfied with his talks in the US, noting that US officials in the Administration and the Congress gave him a warm welcome and showed interest in Cyprus developments.

    Christofias said he requested US intervention to shift Ankara from its stance on the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    Yiannitsis says Greece backs Cyprus in peace talks

    Larnaca, Apr 18 (CNA) - Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis arrived in Cyprus today, expressing Greece's support for Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides' efforts to solve the Cyprus problem through his face-to-face talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash under UN auspices.

    Yiannitsis said he hoped that during Greece' presidency of the EU, at the first half of 2003, the bloc's enlargement would be officially signed with the ten new members, including Cyprus.

    On arrival at Larnaca Airport, Yiannitsis said that Cyprus' accession negotiations were nearing their conclusion and noted that the island's accession could be a step towards stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
