The UN meeting heard today two of the four invited speakers (the other two were unable to attend) appeal for immediate action by civil society to press on with the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Palestinian areas they have reoccupied in the past ten days and demand the creation of a Palestinian state as step in the direction of permanent peace. Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the minister backed a proposed initiative by the House to the Knesset (Israeli parliament) to begin contacts between the two warring factions with a view to promote a new peace process on the Middle East. At the UN NGO meeting in solidarity with the Palestinian people, which took place in Nicosia today, the NGOs adopted an urgent appeal and a plan of action, expressing their concern about the situation in the Middle East, deploring Israeli aggression against the Palestinians, and demanding that measures, including the boycott of Israeli products, be taken to exert pressure on Israel. In their urgent appeal, the NGOs note that the situation in the Middle East is "explosive and dangerous" and demand the "immediate lifting of the siege on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat" and the "immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from the 1967 occupied Palestinian and Arab territories and the lifting of all closures and checkpoints".
