    Washington, Apr 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias has invited the US to apply pressure on the Turkish side to change its intransigent stance at the UN peace talks to help find a political settlement in Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 19/4/2002 to 20/4/2002

    The weather will be fine at the morning, becoming partly cloudy during midday with showers local mostly at the western part of the island.

    The prevailing wind will be southwest, moderate to fresh breeze, 4 to 5 beaufort. The temperature will range from 21-23 degrees at daytime to 10 degrees inland and 13 at the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 21/4/2002 to 22/4/2002

    Temporal improvement of the weather on Sunday. Small fall in temperature.

    UN NGO meeting set to adopt plan of action on Middle East

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) -- Representatives of non governmental organióations (NGOs) operating under UN auspices, who gathered here for a one-day meeting in solidarity with the Palestinian people, are working on a draft communique outlining a plan of action to protest the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories.

    The UN meeting heard today two of the four invited speakers (the other two were unable to attend) appeal for immediate action by civil society to press on with the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Palestinian areas they have reoccupied in the past ten days and demand the creation of a Palestinian state as step in the direction of permanent peace.

    Cyprus' 2001 imports/exports/trade deficit increase

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus' total imports as well as total exports increased during the period January - December 2001, as compared with the respective period of 2000. The 2001 trade deficit compared to 2000 also increased.

    According to an official statistic report on Cyprus Foreign Trade, total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into boned warehouses) totalled 2.528,7 mn Cyprus pounds, as compared with 2.401,9 mn in 2000. Total exports valued 628 mn pounds compared to 591,9 mn pounds in 2000. (one Cyprus pound = 1,5 US dollars)

    Cyprus and Malta sign a cooperation agreement

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA)-- Cyprus and Malta signed here today a cooperation agreement on local administration, local decentralisation and EU programmes.

    Speaking after the signing ceremony, Cyprus Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou stressed that the agreement will enact and strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.

    Maltese Justice and Local Councils Minister Austin Gatt, who is paying a three-day visit to Cyprus, expressed hope that through this agreement, Cyprus and Malta, both candidate countries for EU membership, will upgrade their cooperation.

    Hain urged Denktash to become more involved in Cyprus talks

    London, Apr 18 (CNA) - British Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, has said he told Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that he must become more involved in face-to-face talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides on the Cyprus problem, as this was the best opportunity to "get a deal" for the Turkish Cypriots on the island.

    Cyprus protests Israeli attacks against Church of Nativity

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus will file a protest with the Israeli government for its offensive against the Holy Church of Nativity, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides announced here today.

    Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the minister backed a proposed initiative by the House to the Knesset (Israeli parliament) to begin contacts between the two warring factions with a view to promote a new peace process on the Middle East.

    "Our Ambassador to Israel has been instructed to make a formal demarch to the government of Israel with regard to the siege of the Church and the shooting against the building," Kasoulides said.

    Fuel prices in Cyprus go up 2,75 cents per litre

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) - Fuel prices in Cyprus have been increased by 2,75 cents per litre, including Value Added Tax. The House of Representatives decision has immediate effect.

    The government had requested an increase of 4 cents, but the House Finance Committee brought it down to 2,5 cents, excluding VAT.

    NGOs demand Sharon be tried for war crimes

    Nicosia, Apr 18 (CNA) - Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have demanded the trial of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in an international tribunal for war crimes against the Palestinian people, and have stressed that the US cease supporting the Israeli government's policy.

    At the UN NGO meeting in solidarity with the Palestinian people, which took place in Nicosia today, the NGOs adopted an urgent appeal and a plan of action, expressing their concern about the situation in the Middle East, deploring Israeli aggression against the Palestinians, and demanding that measures, including the boycott of Israeli products, be taken to exert pressure on Israel.

    In their urgent appeal, the NGOs note that the situation in the Middle East is "explosive and dangerous" and demand the "immediate lifting of the siege on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat" and the "immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from the 1967 occupied Palestinian and Arab territories and the lifting of all closures and checkpoints".
