    2002 Cyprus Rally has started

    Limassol, 19 (CNA) -- Ôhe Cyprus Rally 2002 began here today with Marcus Gronholms Peugeot being the first car to start, followed three minutes later by Gilles Panizzi also of Peugeot and Richard Burns, another Peugeot driver.

    Tommi Makinen of Subaru and Carlos Sainz of Ford were next. The cars of priority 1 started the Rally at three minutes intervals while all the rest at two minutes intervals.

    UN peace talks continue

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Dentkash met here for well over an hour in the context of the UN-led peace talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Present at the meeting were the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and aides to the two leaders.

    Limassol, Apr 19 (CNA) - Ford driver Martin Marco is currently in the lead of the Cyprus Rally 2002, followed by British Ford driver Colin McRae with 0.05.08''. Third in the overall classification is Marcus Gronholm in a Peugeot, followed by Ford's Francois Duvall.

    Already, 34 cars have finished the third special stage of today's first leg of the Rally and have entered the fourth one, while 23 cars still continue in the third special stage.

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides had a brief meeting here today with Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis on recent developments in the ongoing UN-led peace talks on Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- The government has backed fully the actions of the police at last night's demonstration outside the residence of Israeli Ambassador Michael Eligal, where scuffles broke out, and said that nobody can justify what some of the protesters did.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the government wishes to maintain its diplomatic ties with Israel and cautioned against any action that might put the country at risk.

    UN Human Rights Expert Reports on visit to Iraq

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis United Nations, Apr 19 (CNA) --UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iraq, Andreas Mavrommatis, has issued a report on his February visit to Iraq, only the second time since 1991 that Iraq has permitted a UN human rights expert to visit.

    In the report, Cypriot born Mavrommatis, who served as the Cyprus Republic's permanent representative to the UN, noted that his visit was a short one with a limited agenda. Nevertheless, he welcomed this opportunity as an "exploratory" mission aimed at gaining insight into the situation within Iraq.

    Greek official praises Cyprus' progress towards EU accession

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus has made "remarkable" progress in its accession negotiations with the European Union and is to be included in the first group of candidate countries that will join the Union, Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannistis has said.

    Speaking at a press conference, he also said Greece has absolute confidence in President Glafcos Clerides' handling of the peace negotiations but noted that all indications so far do not allow for optimism, without however ruling out the possibility for a change of heart on the part of the Turkish side at the talks.

    Israeli embassy condemns behaviour of protestors

    Nicosia, Apr 19 (CNA) -- The Israeli embassy here has condemned the behaviour of demonstrators protesting Israel's offensive against the Palestinian people and described it as "disgraceful and abusive".

    An embassy statement, issued a day after demonstrators clashed with the local police outside the residence of the Israeli Ambassador, advocated dialogue as the only means to solve disputes among people and between nations.

    McRae wins Cyprus Rally first leg

    Limassol, Apr 19 (CNA) - Britain's Colin McRae in a Ford won today's first leg of the Cyprus Rally 2002 and obviously meant it when he said afterwards that "Cyprus is good for us".

    McRae, whose time was 1:27:42.3, said at the end of the first leg that his car is working well and that the twisty special stages of the Cyprus Rally are "no disadvantage". Second to McRae is Marcus Gronholm in a Peugeot with a total time of 1:27:49.2, while Martin Markko in Ford came in third with 1:27:56.3, followed by Francois Duvall in a Ford, Tommi Makinen in a Subaru and Kenneth Eriksson in a Skoda.

    Three down, three to go for Cyprus' EU accession

    by Nicos Bellos Brussels, Apr 19 (CNA) - Cyprus has closed three more chapters of the acquis communautaire, bringing their number to 27, and has thus reaffirmed it is ahead of all other candidate for EU accession countries.

    With the wrapping up of the chapters on Taxation, Regional Policy and Institutional Affairs, at today's 16th EU Ministerial Conference, it can be safely said that Cyprus is the first candidate country to conclude its accession negotiations, as it has only three more chapters left, those of Competition, Agriculture and Budget.
