    Bush hopes Cyprus peace talks will lead to settlement

    Washington, Mar 26 (CNA) -- US President George Bush has welcomed the resumption of the UN-led peace talks on Cyprus and expressed hope they would lead to a solution that will strengthen regional peace and stability.

    Speaking at a special ceremony to mark Greece's national day, Bush praised Athens' role and contribution to the fight against terrorism and said Washington is encouraged by the rapprochement between Greece and Turkey.

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- A high ranking British parliamentarian has called on the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to grasp the opportunity, afforded to them by the ongoing peace talks, in a positive manner.

    "This is a moment of opportunity after such a long wait within the island. We hope that it will be grasped positively by both sides," Donald Anderson, heading a large delegation of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said after a meeting here today with Tassos Papadopoulos, chairman of the Cyprus House European Affairs Committee.

    Second round of talks to conclude Wednesday

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- The last but one meeting between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides took place today, as the second round of UN-led peace talks is coming to an end.

    President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met here today for less than an hour, in the presence of UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

    Committee Meeting of Mediterranean Memorandum on Port State Control

    Limassol, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus attaches particular emphasis to the enhancement of the equality and the safety of ships under the Cyprus flag, Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou said here today opening the 5th Committee Meeting of the Mediterranean Memorandum on Port State Control.

    In his address, read out by the Director of the Department of Merchant Shipping Sergios Sergiou, Neophytou expressed the conviction that Cyprus will soon be a member of the EU and in this capacity "it will be an important link between the European and the Mediterranean Memorandum on Port State Control in the common objective for a safer and cleaner Mediterranean sea".

    He also expressed regret that political strife prevented Maritime Authorities of Member States of the Memorandum to participate in this meeting. Turkey and Israel do not attend the meeting.

    Libya supports just solution to Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Libyan Foreign Minister Abdulrahman Shalgan and Minister of Environment, Human Resources and Infrastructure and President of the Libyan-Cyprus Friendship Group at the General Peoples Congress Dr Ehteuesh Ehteuesh have expressed their country's support for the just struggle of the people of Cyprus and underlined the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions.

    The two Libyan officials had separate meetings in Tripoli yesterday with Cyprus House President Demitris Christofias, who is in Libya for a three-day official visit at the invitation of the President of Libya's General People's Congress Zenati Mohamed Zenati.

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Chairman of the Japan - Cyprus Friendship Group in the Japanese Parliament Tsutomu Kawara and President of Cyprus Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee and of the Cyprus - Japan Friendship Group in the Cyprus House Nicos Anastasiades agreed here today on the enhancement and tightening of the relations between the two countries.

    Earlier today the Japanese MP met with Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou who said that Kawara noted during their meeting that Cyprus as an EU member state, with very favourable tax institutions, could become the headquarters of Japanese companies, doing business with European countries.

    More tourists from Russia expected in Cyprus this year

    Larnaca, Mar 26 (CNA) -- More tourists from Russia are expected to visit Cyprus this year compared to 2001, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis said here today

    Speaking to CNA on his departure for Moscow to participate in the tourist exhibition "MITT 2002", Rolandis added that last year 130.000 Russian tourists came to Cyprus compared with 148.000 in 2000 and said the reduction was due to the terrorist attacks against the USA on September 11.

    Asked to comment on the coming conference in Amman in connection with the conveying of natural gas to Cyprus from Syria, Rolandis said that one of the aims of the meeting is the conveying of Egyptian gas to Syria as the quantities of Syrian natural gas are not sufficient.

    President Clerides: No encouraging results from the talks so far

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- There haven't been so far any encouraging results from the ongoing UN-led direct peace talks aiming at reaching a settlement to the Cyprus problem, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here today.

    He added that whether the two sides in Cyprus will reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem prior to the island's accession to the EU depends on the influence that the international community will exert on the Turkish side, so that the latter would take its further steps within the framework of the UN resolutions on Cyprus.
