De Soto was due to cross later this morning to the island's Turkish- occupied areas to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. In the afternoon he will attend the last Clerides-Denktash meeting of the second round of the UN-led direct talks, which began in mid January 2002, with a view to reach a comprehensive settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem. President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met for about 90 minutes, in the presence of UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto. Today Christofias left Libya for Egypt to pay an official visit at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Fathry Sorour. Christofias invited his Libyan counterpart to visit Cyprus officially, an invitation that was accepted by Zenati. Christofias and Zenati discussed current developments on the Cyprus problem and the Middle East and stressed the need for a peaceful resolution on the basis of relevant UN resolutions in both cases. The House President also met yesterday in Tripoli with Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Libya's General People's Congress Suleyman Shhumi and later on held a meeting with Cypriot businessmen who work and reside in Libya. Speaking after an RTP delegation met with a delegation of the Greek Cypriot Social Democrats Movement (KISOS), Talat said there has been no progress yet in the UN-led peace talks, which began here in mid January, and he sent out the message to Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that a solution in Cyprus is imperative.
