Cyprus pays great attention to efforts to counter racism

New York, Jan 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus has always strongly supported effective action by the United Nations aiming at eliminating all forms of racial discrimination, Cyprus' representative Demetris Hadjiargyrou has said, adding that Cyprus welcomes the conclusion of the deliberations in Geneva concerning the Declaration and Programme of Action of the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and related Intolerance.

Speaking at the UN Third Committee in New York, on the issue of eliminating All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the Cypriot representative said the universal ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination should be made a top priority and attention should be drawn to the model legislation drawn by the United Nations to fight racism and intolerance.

Nicosia, Jan 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the European Union George Vassiliou has said the accession date set by the EU for those countries that will be ready to join the Union by January 1, 2004, is realistic and expressed optimism that during the first six months of 2002 Cyprus will close the chapters on competition and taxation.
