UN chief optimistic for Cyprus settlement by end of June

New York, Jan 10 (CNA) - Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis met yesterday with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the international organisation's headquarters in New York, where the latter expressed optimism that Cyprus talks may lead to a settlement by the end of June.

Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Friday and Saturday: 11/01/2002 to 12/1/2002

The weather on Friday will be mainly fine and sunny. The winds light to moderate. The temperature between 7C minimum and 15C maximum over the coast and between 4C minimum and 13C maximum inland.

Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 13/1/2002 to 14/1/2002

The weather continuing fine and mainly sunny. The temperature continuing between 8C minimum and 16C maximum over the coast and between 6C minimum and 14C maximum inland.

Sea Temperature: 14C

FITCH Ratings' experts say Cyprus meets EU economic criteria

Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) -- FITCH Ratings, an international economy evaluating firm has said Cyprus meets the economic criteria to join the European Union and the criteria required to join the European Economic Monetary Union.
