    [01] House passes anti-terrorism bill

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) - The Plenary of the House of Representatives yesterday passed the anti-terrorism bill, tabled by Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis, with a view to ratify the International Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism, as part of efforts to assist the worldwide fight against terrorism.

The bill, which was passed with 42 votes in favour and one abstention, that of the Environmentalists' Movement MP Giorgos Perdikes, provides for life imprisonment or a two million pounds fine and/or both such penalties to be imposed on those found guilty of contravening the law and proposes the establishment of an anti-terrorism unit with extraordinary powers and a special fund for the victims of terrorism. Cyprus pleased with Fontaine's clear remarks

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- The government has expressed "deep satisfaction" with the statements of support from the President of the European Parliament with regard to Cyprus' accession to the European Union and the UN-led peace effort to find a negotiated settlement to the island's political problem.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou pointed out that this is the first time such clear messages are sent in various directions, after Ankara's threats to annex Cyprus' northern occupied areas, and said Fontaine's remarks could very well be regarded as a pressure lever on the Turkish side.

"Her remarks confirm all the messages the EU has conveyed to us in the recent past in a stronger and clearer manner," the Spokesman said, adding that they prove the "stability and the resolve of the EU" on the Cyprus issue and the country's accession.| CNA/MM/RG/2001
