[02] Spokesman: We don't want a series of endless meetings

Nicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side does not wish to get engaged in endless face to face meetings with the Turkish Cypriot side, similar to next month's meeting between the President and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today and stressed that the December meeting does not mark the beginning of a new or a parallel process to that of the UN-led proximity talks.

Papapetrou said that the 4th of December meeting could be followed by a second one but Rauf Denktash will then have to clarify whether he is ready to continue the UN-led talks and define the type of talks he is willing to attend, face-to- face or proximity ones.| . Following an exchange of letters, the two leaders have agreed.

[04] Nicole Fontaine: Cyprus will join the EU

Nicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine has made it absolutely clear that Cyprus will become a European Union member, with or without a political settlement, and said the Parliament will do its best to help the peace effort.

Speaking after being received by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Fontaine, on a two-day official visit here, said that accession to the EU could act as a catalyst for a solution, adding that Cyprus is among the countries most prepared for EU membership.

Addressing herself to the Turkish Cypriots, she appealed to them to make some kind of gesture to help find a settlement, telling them that blocking a solution does not serve their interests.| CNA/MM/RG/2001

[05] Fontaine hopes for a change in Turkish Cypriot positions

Nicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- Nicole Fontaine, European Parliament President, has expressed hope that the Turkish Cypriot leader will shift from his positions with regard to the Cyprus issue, noting that they are unacceptable.

She also said the Parliament is firm on its adherence to the principles of freedom, the rule of law and respect for human rights, adding that a solution in Cyprus should be in the framework of a federal state.

"We hope that the December meeting between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will bring out those positive elements that will allow Denktash to move away from his positions, which we consider unacceptable," Fontaine, on a two-day official visit to the island, said after a meeting with House President Demetris Christofias.| CNA/MM/RG/2001
