    [01] SOCCER: Cyprus League - Kick off

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus 2001-2002 football season opens today with all soccer clubs divided into four divisions playing their first match of the season over the weekend.

    Omonia of Nicosia won the championship in the last season. Apollon of Limassol were the Cup winners. Olympiakos of Nicosia were the League's runner up. Apollon and Olympiakos were qualified for the first round of the UEFA Cup, while champions Omonia failed to qualify in the Champions League.

    The first division with 14 teams opens today the 63rd Cyprus league with five games. Two other games will be played tomorrow.

    The newcomers in the first division (promoted from the second division) are Alki of Larnaca, Ermis of Aradippou and Ethnikos of Assia.

    Today's matches: APOEL v AEL, Ermis v Anorthosis, Doxa v Ethnikos Akchna , Paralimni v AEP, Ethnikos Assia v AEK.

    Tomorrow's matches: Apollon v Omonia, Alki v Olympiakos. CNA/GP/2001

    [02] US - Cyprus problem

    Washington, Sep 15 (CNA) -- US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston has reiterated Washington's "unwavering support" for UN efforts to find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus and said that the Republic's European Union accession process offers "an incentive" towards achieving this objective.

    He also said that Turkey, through its engagement with the EU for membership, can and should contribute towards a Cyprus solution.

    [03] Cyprus - Indian Prime Minister - Visit - Postponement

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) -- Indian Premier's three-day official visit to Cyprus has been postponed, state sources told CNA.

    Prime Minister of India Atal Behari Vajpayee was due to visit Cyprus on September 20-22 and hold official talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    An agreement between the two countries was going to be signed during his visit.

    Yesterday an official press release said that Spanish Premier's two-day visit to Cyprus was also postponed.

    Spanish Prime Minister Don Jose Maria Aznar was scheduled to visit the island on September 17-18 and have talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides on the Cyprus problem, EU enlargement process and Cyprus bid to join the EU. CNA/MK/2001

    [04] Maritime Cyprus 2001

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) -- The southern coastal town of Limassol will play host September 23 - 26 to the 7th biennial international shipping conference "Maritime Cyprus 2001" that will focus on challenges and prospects for shipping as a global industry.

    Some 900 prominent shipowners, insurers, bankers, lawyers, accountants and individuals dealing with maritime issues will attend the conference, the Director of the Cyprus Merchant Shipping Department Sergios Sergiou told CNA.
