    [02] Cyprus High Commissioner - Maltese Prime Minister

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus High Commissioner to Malta Alexandros Zenon today met with Maltese Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami and briefed him on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, especially after Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash refused to accept the UN Secretary General's invitation to continue the talks on Cyprus.

    According to an official press release, Zenon, who yesterday presented his credentials to the Maltese President, discussed with the Prime Minister issues relating to the two countries' accession course into the European Union, ways to enhance the bilateral relations between Malta and Cyprus and Commonwealth issues.     [03] Defence Minister - US Attacks - Cyprus - NATO

    Nicosia, Sept 14 (CNA)-- Cyprus, as a non NATO member, has no commitment in participating in a NATO operation against the countries which give refuge or accommodate terrorists, Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos said here today adding that "when the EU decides to contribute to this NATO effort and requests from Cyprus to dispose of the facilities", which it has already contributed to the European Defence Force, "the Government of the Republic of Cyprus will look into the matter in all seriousness and take its decisions accordingly."

    Invited to say what kind of assistance could Cyprus provide to a NATO's operation against countries, which give refuge or accommodate terrorists Hasikos noted "Cyprus is not a NATO member and consequently has no commitment in participating in this potential operation." CNA/GS/MK/2001

    [04] Cyprus - Spanish Premier - visit - Postponement

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Spanish Premier's two-day visit to Cyprus has been postponed, an official press release issued here today reads.

    Spanish Prime Minister Don Jose Maria Aznar was scheduled to visit the island on September 17-18 and have talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides on the Cyprus problem, EU enlargement process and Cyprus bid to join the EU.

    [05] House President - Cyprus question

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias said here today that the Cyprus problem stands at a difficult turn and expressed the belief that Turkey's role will be upgraded after the terrorist attacks against the US.

    Speaking after a meeting he had today with President of the Chinese people's Association for Friendship with Foreign countries Cheng Hao Su, Christofias also noted that the Cyprus Government, House of Representatives and political parties must safeguard Cyprus sovereignty and territorial integrity and the human rights of the people of Cyprus while on his part Hao Su expressed hope that "a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem will be reached."     [06] Cyprys FM Arab ambassadors

    by Maria Myles Washington, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has outlined the government's positions to ambassadors of Arab countries in the Gulf with regard to the Cyprus question and asked for their support to avert any move which might lead to the recognition of the self-styled regime in the Turkish- occupied part of Cyprus.

    Speaking to CNA from New York where he is now, the minister said "I have explained to the ambassadors that President Glafcos Clerides is ready to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash within the framework of the UN- led talks and within the parameters these talks set out." CNA/MM/GP/2001

    [07] President Clerides - Return

    Larnaca, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Clafcos Clerides said here today that he does not think that the Cyprus problem has been shelved after the postponement of his meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, due to the terrorist attacks in the US, and that he will examine the whole situation along with the National Council, in order to decide the Greek Cypriot side's further steps, in concert with the Greek Government.

    President Clerides returned home this evening from Montreal via Zurich. A Swissair plane carrying him to New York on Tuesday had to divert to Canada after the closure of the US airspace because of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.     [08] Cyprus - Seminar - Digital system

    Limassol, Sep 14 (CNA)-- The need for a common Multimedia Home Platform was stressed during a two-day seminar on the "Transition from Analogy to Digital" system, organised by the European Audiovisual Organization "Eureka" in cooperation with Cyprus Press and Information Office (PIO,) which wrapped up here today.

    During today's seminar, experts from Britain, the Netherlands, Poland and the European Union focused on the operation of digital television in their countries, the technological challenges they confronted and the solutions reached.
