    [01] Cyprus - US - Attacks - Day of mourning

    Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus participates today in the day of mourning declared by the European Union for the victims of the terrorist attacks against the United States.

    Flags at government buildings were flying half mast. At midday air raid sirens will wail. A three-minute silence will be observed in the memory of those killed during the attacks.

    Meanwhile, the book of condolences opened two days ago at the American Embassy in Nicosia, in memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks, will continue will be opened until 16:00 hours local time today.

    Cypriot high ranking officials and ordinary people have signed the book. Many Cypriots have laid flowers at the US embassy. CNA/RM/GP/2001

    Cyprus FM - US - Meetings

    Washington, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had a working lunch in New York yesterday with UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto for a review of recent developments in UN efforts to resume the stalled peace talks, in the light of the refusal of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to accept the UN chief's invitation for talks.

    As Alvaro de Soto had told CNA, after his return to New York on Monday, yesterday was his first day at work to try and catch up with what is happening.

    [03] Central Bank - 2000 Annual Report

    Nicosia, Sept 14 (CNA) - The Cyprus Central Bank notes in its Annual Report for 2000 that the economy is expected to continue to grow at a satisfactory pace in 2001 and real GDP growth is anticipated to be in the region of 4,0 percent, while the unemployment ratio is expected to register a further small decline to less than 3,4 per cent of the economically active population.

    In its Report, the Central Bank states that the island's European Union accession course "continued successfully in 2000" and five additional chapters were provisionally closed, including the fundamental chapter of the free movement of goods.
