    [02] Cyprus - Motor tanker - Collision

Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping (CDMS) has said it was not formally informed about a criminal investigation initiated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) concerning the alleged collision of a Cypriot flag motor tanker ("VIRGO") with a United States of America flag fishing vessel ("STARBOUND") earlier this month, in international waters, around 130 miles of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, during which three American fishermen, members of the crew of the vessel, lost their lives.

A press release issued by the CDMS noted that the consent of Cyprus for the conduct of a criminal investigation in the name of and or on behalf of Cyprus was never sought and that the removal from the vessel, by the RCMP, of all records and documents which could contain information on the incident "hampers the investigation which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus initiated and severely inhibits any action that Cyprus may find necessary to take, in accordance with its laws, against those who might be accountable, if it can be established that the 'VIRGO' was involved in the incident."
