    [01] Government Spokesman - T/C leader - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government would welcome a return of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to the negotiating table if he appears ready to negotiate seriously and constructively for a solution to the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stated today.

    The Cypriot official told his daily press briefing that the Cyprus government would wait patiently to see Denktash' stance on fresh UN efforts to achieve resumption of the peace process.

    [02] Cyprus Chief Negotiator - Maltese Finance Minister

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Maltese Finance Minister John Dalli, here on a two- day visit, has expressed hope that Malta will be among the first group of countries to join the European Union, acknowledging that Cyprus has made more progress than his country in its accession course.

    Speaking after meeting today Cyprus' Chief negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou, Dalli expressed hope that his country would finalise its accession negotiations and be eligible for full membership. CNA/NMA/RM/GP/2001

    [04] "Kypria 2001" - Festival - Cultural events

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) - The Énternational Festival "Kypria 2001", which has been running for 11 years now, will be "totally different this year" and will be given a European dimension, Cyprus Education and Culture Minister Ouranios Ioannides told a press conference held today in Nicosia.

    Introducing the events, which will take place over the next few months, starting September 1, Ioannides said the Festival covers a wide range of cultural events, including Ancient Greek Theater performances, Opera, Traditional Dances from different countries and performances by the Cyprus State Orchestra and the Polish Orchestra "Sinfonia Varsovia".     Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) - Cyprus will participate in this year's 66th International Fair of Thessaloniki (Salonica), Greece, to be organised between 8 - 16 September.

    Speaking to CNA, on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Andreas Savvides, said Cyprus' participation, which consists of 23 exhibitors and is organised by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism in cooperation with the Cyprus Chamber of Industry and Commerce (KEVE), covers the fields of Industry and Services.     [06] Cyprus - UEL - CoE - Conference

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host the 4th Conference of the Unified European Left (UEL) political group of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, scheduled to take place in the eastern coastal town of Larnaca between 27 - 28 August.

    According to an official press release issued here today, the Conference will be attended by MPs from Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic, France, Sweden, the Ukraine and Moldavia. CNA/AAR/RM/2001

    [07] Cyprus - Malta - Finance Ministers

    Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus Minister of Finance Takis Klerides and his Maltese counterpart John Dalli, in Cyprus for a four-day visit, today held talks on the economic problems the two countries face in their accession course to the European Union (EU), and expressed hope that their countries will close all negotiating chapters with the EU by the end of next year.

    Speaking after the meeting, Klerides said "Cyprus and Malta will cooperate in various fields in relation to EU programmes, and in the field of Health" adding that both countries share "common economic problems" as regards the harmonisation process with the acquis communautaire. CNA/AAR/RM/2001
