1225:CYPPRESS:01[01]Toronto - Cyprus - ResolutionNicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot organisations in Canada have appealed to the Canadian government and the international community to exert pressure on Turkey "to desist from its intransigent stand and anachronistic policies and show the necessary political will regarding a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem." The organisations' position is included in a resolution adopted by the citizens of Canada representatives of the constituent organisations of the Cypriot community of Toronto, the Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus of Canada, the Cypriot Community of Mississauga, the Cypriot Community of Kitchener/Waterloo, the Cyprus-Canada Chamber of Commerce, the Greek Cypriots Cultural Organisation and the Cyprus-Canadian Hunters and Trap Shooters Association, on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus territory in 1974. The motion, tabled on July 3, 2001, reads that the House of Commons "remembers with deep sorrow that another year has passed since the Turkish military invasion of the Republic of Cyprus in 1974 and that the beautiful and historic town of Famagusta remains a deserted town in the now occupied area of northern Cyprus and is inaccessible to its former citizens." Replying to questions on Cyprus in the end of a term adjournment debate in the House of Commons Twigg also reaffirmed that the British government would use "whatever opportunities they can to press human rights matters with the Turkish government."
