[02] Foreign Minister - Peace talks

Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- The government has strong indications that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash may return to the UN-led peace talks to continue the process on the same basis where it stopped last year, without having any of his demands for a resumption of the talks met, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, adding that if this is the case, the government would go along with it.

Kasoulides expressed some reservations about a "change of heart" on the part of the Turkish side, noting this remains to be seen. He also expressed the view that an eventual return to the dialogue by the Turkish side is due to the realization that it has become politically isolated.

The minister's comments come in the wake of a statement by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that he will decide whether to resume the talks he abandoned last year after his meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York. Turkish premier Bulent Ecevit referred to the need to continue the dialogue on the basis of what he called "the realities" in Cyprus.

"There is a strong indication that they (Turkish side) may return to the negotiating table without fulfilling any of the preconditions they have been putting forward," Kasoulides told journalists at a press conference he gave with his Luxembourg counterpart Lydie Polfer, who is concluding a two- day official visit to Cyprus.
