[02] House President - Slovak House President
Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Recent developments in the Cyprus peace effort and
the accession of Cyprus and Slovakia to the European Union were among the
issues discussed here today between House President Demetris Christofias
and his Slovak counterpart Josef Migas, on the island for a private visit.
Speaking after the meeting, Christofias said he accepted an invitation by
Migas to pay an official visit to Slovakia, adding that they have agreed to
further develop relations between the two parliaments, while Migas
expressed hope that the Cyprus problem would be solved soon "peacefully and
democratically with the two communities living together."

[03] House President - Irish politician
Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Deputy leader of the Fine Gael party of Ireland
Jim Mitchell today expressed hope that Cyprus will join the European Union
as a "united, federal country," pointing out that a political settlement is
not a precondition for accession.
Speaking after a meeting with House President Demetris Christofias,
Mitchell, who visits Cyprus at the invitation of the Democratic Rally
(DISI), said that among candidate countries, Cyprus is the most advanced
and better equipped to adopt the rules and norms of the Union, noting that
"the advantages of Cyprus' EU membership will become more evident after the
island's accession."
