[01] Cyprus government - EU position - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government welcomed today and described as objective the EU position on the Cyprus problem, outlined in a paragraph on Cyprus, that was incorporated in the EU priorities general text on issues to be presented at the 56th UN General Assembly.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said through this position the European Union "had outlined the unacceptable status quo in Cyprus, backed the UN Secretary-General's efforts for a settlement based on the UN relevant resolutions and blamed indirectly albeit clearly the Turkish Cypriot side for the interruption of the dialogue."

[06] Commerce Minister - British High Commissioner

Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis said here today that a British 45-second video clip, publicising the penalties in Cyprus for consuming drugs, showed images of Cyprus that were appalling for tourists and thus raised objections from the island's authorities.

Speaking after a meeting he had with Britain's High Commissioner to Cyprus Edward Clay, Rolandis said that the British will now make an effort to produce a new film on Cyprus and its drugs policy with a view to inform tourists of Cyprus policy on drugs without scaring them off, while on his part Clay said Britain's effort is to reduce the number of people who get arrested here because they are ignorant of the penalties imposed by the Courts for such offences.
