    [02] Finance Minister - Ireland

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Issues relating to Cyprus' harmonisation effort with the European Union acquis communautaire, with special reference to taxation and the role of the Central Bank in the introduction of the Euro, are at the core of discussions Cyprus Finance Minister Takis Klerides is having in Ireland.

    The minister is also having talks on the implementation of a cooperation protocol with Dublin and on ways to further develop bilateral trade and economic relations. CNA/RM/MM/2001

    [03] US Senate Committee - Resolution - Cypriot enclaved

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has adopted a resolution on the enclaved people in Turkish occupied Cyprus which "strongly urges American President George Bush to undertake efforts to end restrictions on the freedoms and human rights of the enclaved people of Cyprus".

    The resolution calls on the US Congress to expresses its intention to "remain actively interested in the matter until the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the enclaved people of Cyprus are restored, respected and safeguarded." CNA/RM/MM/2001

    [04] Cyprus - Syria - Egypt

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Syria's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Wealth Mohammad Mahir Jamal will visit Cyprus between 5 - 7 August at the invitation of Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis.

    According to an official press release, during his stay in Cyprus, Jamal will participate in talks on issues relating to petroleum and natural gas.

    [05] Zackheos - Conference - Middle East

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus will participate in a three-day international meeting on the Middle East peace process, which will look into agreements reached so far and ways to resume talks.

    According to an official press release Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN and member of the Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinians, Sotos Zackheos, will take part in the Conference, from 17-19 July, to mark ten years since the Madrid Accord was signed, initiating the peace process in the Middle East.     [06] Cyprus - EU - General Affairs Council

    Brussels, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The European Union considers the status quo in Cyprus unacceptable and calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to resume the UN- led peace process as soon as possible with a view to finding a comprehensive settlement, EU member states said here today.

    A paragraph on Cyprus, incorporated in the EU priorities general text on issues to be presented at the 56th UN General Assembly, says the EU "regrets that there is currently a standstill in the process and calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to resume the process as soon as possible."
