    London - Cyprus - Demonstration

London, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Greek-Cypriots living in London demonstrated yesterday against the protracted division of Cyprus and the continuing occupation by Turkish troops of 37% of Cyprus' territory for 27 years.

Some 7.000 demonstrators gathered in Trafalkar Square, London, where 11 British MPs and Euro MPs, who addressed the gathering said Britain could and should play a more active role in efforts for reaching a settlement of the Cyprus problem, Cyprus should join the European Union with or without a settlement of its problem and that this settlement should constitute a precondition for Turkey's accession to the EU.

Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has stated that Cyprus and Greece have launched an intensive diplomatic campaign while US and Britain were making interventions to counter Turkish propaganda, demanding recognition of the self-styled regime in the Turkish- occupied part of Cyprus.

Speaking before his departure for Bahrain yesterday for a two-day official visit, Kasoulides expressed the belief that there was no visible danger for recognition of the illegal regime noting at the same time that "we are making intensive efforts to tackle this Turkish diplomatic attack".
