[01] Social Democrats President - Interview

by Myria Antoniadou Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - President of Cyprus' Social Democrats Movement (KISOS) Vasos Lyssarides believes the UN Security Council should once again set the parametres of a settlement in Cyprus and underlined it must be clarified that UN resolutions are the basis of the peace talks. He also said an international campaign should be undertaken to inform foreign governments on the impasse in the UN-led peace effort.

In an interview with CNA in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections, Lyssarides said he is not against Turkey's European Union accession when it meets the criteria and appeared satisfied with the Republic's course for harmonising its legislation with the European aquis communautaire, even though he said the House should employ technocrats to help deputies.

[04] President Clerides - European Court ruling

Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides has described as "extremely important" a judgment by the European Court of Human Rights that found Turkey guilty of gross human rights violations in the areas of the Republic it occupies since 1974, when its troops invaded the island.

The President said the Court ruling "offers Cyprus a powerful weapon" in the UN- led peace talks, aiming at a comprehensive settlement, stressing also the fact that the Court notes that it recognises only one legal government on the island, the government of the Republic of Cyprus. [05] Attorney General - European Court ruling - Turkey

Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - Cyprus won its fourth inter-state application against Turkey for human rights violations "because we have a very good case," Attorney General Alecos Markides said here today, stressing that failure to see a European Court of Human Rights judgment on this case implemented would mean there is "a fatal flaw in the system set up to respect human rights."

Speaking at a press conference, a day after the European Court found Turkey guilty on 14 counts of human rights violations, Markides said this was "the biggest legal victory Cyprus has ever had against Turkey, which as of yesterday has an obligation to redress the situation." CNA/MM/RG/2001

Parties pointed out that the ruling must serve as a guideline to seek and secure a just and viable settlement in Cyprus, which should be in line with European Union principles and UN resolutions. CNA/MM/RG/2001
