    [03] Cyprus President - Greek Parliament President - Meeting

    by Maria Koniotou Athens, May 3 (CNA) - President of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis assured Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides here Thursday that the Cyprus problem will continue to be Greece's "first national priority" until the final justification of the people of the island.

    In statements after a meeting in the Greek capital, Clerides said that his government is studying alternative ways to handle the various possible developments in the Cyprus problem. At the same time he thanked the Greek parliament for supporting the people of Cyprus and its decision not to ratify the accession of other European Union candidate countries if Cyprus is not included in the enlargement.

    [04] Greek Premier - Cyprus President - Talks - Communique

    by Maria Koniotou Athens, May3 (CNA) - Greece reaffirmed today that Cyprus's accession to the European Union (EU) is sensible because it ensures peace and security in the region, while at the same time it pledged to provide unlimited support in efforts for a settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem.

    In statements after talks here Thursday with visiting Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Simitis referred to the deadlock in the UN-sponsored peace talks on Cyprus because of the Turkish Cypriot insistence of recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north of the island.

    [05] Cyprus - Meeting - Mediterranean - Environment

    Nicosia, May 3 (CNA) – Environmental issues are included in the island's Strategic Development Plan and are in the forefront of government policy, while government efforts concentrate on implementing the National Programme for harmonisation with the European Union acquis communautaire.

    The statement was made here Thursday by Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister, Costas Themistocleous, at the opening session of the meeting of the Bureau of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution and its Protocols.
