Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said he was, as always, assured of Greece's continuous solidarity, adding that Greece stands firmly by the Republic in its efforts to find a peaceful political settlement and become an EU member. CNA/MK/RG/MM/2001 2105:CYPPRESS:06[06] Presidents of Cyprus and Greece - Formal DinnerAthens, May 2 (CNA) - Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos tonight reassured his Cypriot counterpart Glafcos Clerides that the whole of the political leadership in Greece would make every effort to contribute to the struggle for a free and independent Cyprus, and noted that after the parliamentary elections of May 27 in Cyprus, the international community is expected to make moves towards a permanent solution.Speaking at a formal dinner, hosted in Athens in honour of President Clerides who is paying an official visit to Greece, Stephanopoulos said that Greece would "continue to provide every contribution and support to Cyprus, fulfilling its moral, political and contractual obligations towards the Republic of Cyprus", adding that the joint defence pact between the two countries was a "top national priority" for Greece. CNA/MK/RG/MM/2001 1015:CYPPRESS:07[07] Cyprus problem - UN-led talksby Maria Koniotou Athens, May 2 (CNA) - As the US and Britain appear to be focusing their efforts on convincing Turkey to urge Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to return to the negotiating table for talks on the Cyprus problem under UN auspices, Turkey's political leadership seems to be planning to do just that around the end of the year, when Cyprus' EU accession course will be approaching its conclusion, so as to pose obstacles in finalising the accession process.Diplomatic sources have said this eventuality was discussed today in Athens between the political leaderships of Greece and Cyprus, along with a possible delay of the EU enlargement process, due to the slow progress of one candidate country and the preference of certain EU member states to see ten of the candidate countries joining at the same time, something that would place enlargement around the year 2003.
