[02] Cyprus - Greek Presidents - Press conference

Athens, May 2 (CNA) -- Greek President Costantinos Stefanopoulos has expressed his country's unwavering support for efforts to find a settlement in Cyprus and the Republic's bid to join the European Union, stressing at the same time that Greco-Turkish rapprochement does not mean the Cyprus question takes second place in the list of priorities of the Greek government as far as foreign policy issues are concerned.

Stefanopoulos called on the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to undertake an initiative that would allow the resumption of the UN-led proximity talks on the basis of Security Council resolutions.

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said he was, as always, assured of Greece's continuous solidarity, adding that Greece stands firmly by the Republic in its efforts to find a peaceful political settlement and become an EU member.

    [07] Cyprus problem - UN-led talks

by Maria Koniotou Athens, May 2 (CNA) - As the US and Britain appear to be focusing their efforts on convincing Turkey to urge Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to return to the negotiating table for talks on the Cyprus problem under UN auspices, Turkey's political leadership seems to be planning to do just that around the end of the year, when Cyprus' EU accession course will be approaching its conclusion, so as to pose obstacles in finalising the accession process.

Diplomatic sources have said this eventuality was discussed today in Athens between the political leaderships of Greece and Cyprus, along with a possible delay of the EU enlargement process, due to the slow progress of one candidate country and the preference of certain EU member states to see ten of the candidate countries joining at the same time, something that would place enlargement around the year 2003.
