ERP congress - New leadership
Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - The second congress of the Eurodemocratic Reformist
Party (ERP), which took place yesterday in Nicosia, has authorised its
leadership to carry out meetings and talks with other political forces on
the island, in order to find common positions, in view of the forthcoming
parliamentary elections.
The delegates to the congress also elected the new leadership of ERP.
Antonis Paschalides was re-elected President of the party.

Rann - Cyprus - Commonwealth - Australia
Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - South Australian Labour Opposition leader Mike Rann
has called on Prime Minister John Howard to "show some leadership" over
Cyprus at the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM),
to be held in October in Brisbane, Australia.
Speaking at the national launch of the Justice for Cyprus Website in
Melbourne, Rann criticised the Australian government's handling of the
Cyprus issue at the last CHOGM in 1999 and added that "it is time for the
Commonwealth to prove its credentials on Cyprus and time for Australia to
show some leadership".

UN envoy - Turkish Cypriot leader - Cyprus problem
Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash today
reiterated his unacceptable positions on the Cyprus problem and demanded
that his illegal entity set up in the north be recognised before a
settlement on the island was achieved.
Denktash was speaking after a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's
Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who will be having fresh talks
with President Glafcos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader tomorrow
morning, before giving a press conference in the afternoon on his visit to
the island.
