[01] Cyprus President - Local Administration - Seminar
Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - The Interior Ministry and the Union of Cyprus
Communities today organised a Seminar on "Local Administration in Cyprus,
today's possibilities and future prospects", which is considered to be very
important for Cyprus' European Union (EU) accession course and the future
role and authorities of Local Administration.
In his opening remarks, President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides said
that the government has proven with deeds that it aspires to create "an
even more upgraded and strong Local Administration", which will be able to
"meet its high mission, especially in the framework of the EU, towards
which we are moving", and promised that government assistance to Local
Administration would continue.

[02] Cyprus - ERP - Conference
Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - "Cyprus should demand from the UN Secretary-General
a commitment to talks based on a federal settlement" for the Cyprus
question, Antonis Paschalides, President of the Eurodemocratic Reformist
Party (ERP) said today, adding that Cyprus' accession to the European Union
(EU) constitutes the only way to exert pressure in order to bring about a
just solution to the Cyprus issue.
Speaking at ERP's second congress held today in Nicosia, Paschalides said
his party aims at entering the House of Representatives autonomously during
the forthcoming parliamentary elections and pointed out that "the
Eurodemocratic Reformist Party has a clear European orientation".

[03] Amnesty International Cyprus - Torture - Campaign
Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - Amnesty International Cyprus, taking part in the
world campaign "Take a step to stamp out torture", set up a stall today in
the centre of Nicosia, handing out leaflets and collecting signatures about
individual cases of torture and ill- treatment of prisoners in Austria,
Sierra Leone and China.
President of Amnesty International Cyprus, Doros Kakoullis, told CNA today
that Amnesty International (AI) determined that all over the world, in
Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia and Africa, "citizens are being
discriminated against and are suffering from degrading treatment and
torture".
