[01] Irish Premier - Interview
by Maria Myles Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- Ireland, as a member of the Security
Council in the next two years, will make every possible effort to
contribute towards a peacefully negotiated solution of the Cyprus problem
on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, Irish Prime Minister
Bertie Ahern has said, adding that to arrive at a peaceful settlement one
needs compromise, commitment, consent, engagement of the interested parties
and above all the desire of the majority of the people and their political
representatives for peace.
In an interview with CNA, in advance of his official visit to the Cyprus
Republic this week, Ahern said Cyprus' accession prospects for European
Union membership offer the incentive and the opportunity for serious
efforts to find a solution to the island's political problem, reiterating
Dublin's continued assistance for Cyprus' accession.
