[01] US envoys - Arrival - Statement
Larnaca, Jan 8 (CNA) -- The parties in Cyprus should move from the present
situation to a comprehensive settlement, US Presidential Emissary for
Cyprus Alfred Moses said today, on arrival to the island accompanied by
State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston.
Replying to a question, Moses said that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has
invited the parties to participate in the next round of UN -led proximity
talks on the Cyprus issue, adding that "a specific date has not yet been
set".

[02] Cyprus - Italy - Mediterranean Identity
Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- Eminent academics and deputies from Cyprus and
Italy are attending a two-day meeting on the "Mediterranean Identity" which
will deal with ties between the two countries, Cyprus' historical roots and
the Mediterranean framework.
The two-day Cyprus - Italian seminar will also include a round table
discussion by participating delegates.

[03] US envoys - Denktash
Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- American Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred
Moses and State Department's Special Coordinator for the Cyprus question
Thomas Weston today met with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the
occupied by Turkish troops area of Cyprus.
Speaking after their meeting, Moses said he explained to Denktash "our view
that it is in the interest of both parties to continue" with the UN - led
proximity talks in an effort to find a solution to the Cyprus issue.

[04] State budget - House debate
Nicosia, Jan 8 (CNA) -- All but one parliamentary party, the
Socialdemocrats, have said they would vote in favour of the proposed state
budget for 2001, with some exceptions on specific funding.
Party leaders, speaking at a House plenary debate on the budget today, said
the Republic's struggle to bring to an end the continuing Turkish
occupation of part of Cyprus and to achieve European Union membership has
to be backed by a sound economy.
