    [08] EU - Turkey - Sources

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 2 (CNA) - With only a few days to go before the European Union (EU) issues its reports on Turkey's accession course, i.e. the partnership agreement and the regular report on progress towards membership, it becomes more and more apparent that none of these documents will be tougher or harder, in terms of content or language, than the EU Helsinki conclusions, according to diplomatic sources.

"Turkey is very well aware of the fact that it cannot possibly gain entry into the EU if the Cyprus question remains unresolved", a foreign diplomat has told CNA, pointing out that the Helsinki conclusions set out the framework, the road map, within which Turkey will have to work if it wants to get closer to Europe. by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 2 (CNA) - The UN-led proximity talks, which opened here Wednesday, continue tomorrow with the anticipated submission of a fresh non-paper by the UN on the powers of the executive, according to reliable sources, which believe that the UN are expected to present the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides with a package of ideas after May's parliamentary elections in Cyprus.

As a diplomatic source closely involved with the talks has told CNA, both sides are "actively engaged" in the process and the discussions on the four core issues, adding that the meetings here are very useful. CNA/MM/RG/2000
