[01] UN envoy - Cyprus peace talks - Press conference (Full story)

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 1 (CNA) - The UN intends to persist patiently with the method of constructive engagement on the core issues of the Cyprus question through the presentation of ideas and by inviting comments by the Greek and Turkish Cypriot parties in order to take advantage of what it describes as an "historic opportunity" for a fair and viable comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto said here today.

Speaking just before the fifth round of proximity talks begins later this afternoon in Geneva, de Soto cautioned against great expectations for "spectacular results" in the near future, pointing out that the two sides "are very far apart on some key issues". CNA/MM/RG/2000

[04] British Foreign Secretary - Athens

Athens, Nov 1 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook expressed today the hope that the new round of UN-led talks on Cyprus, taking place in Geneva, would lead to "real negotiations" and reiterated his country's determination to work hard in this direction.

Talking to the press after an hour-long meeting in Athens with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, Cook also pointed to Cyprus' progress in the process of harmonisation with the acquis communautaire and repeated that, according to the Helsinki conclusions, a solution to the island's political problem is not a precondition for accession to the European Union. [06] Rauf Denktash - Alvaro de Soto

by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 1 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash was highly critical today both of the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides on their stance regarding Europe's role in efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

Arriving for his first meeting with de Soto during this fifth round of proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, Denktash reiterated his position that Cyprus' course of accession to the European Union (EU) will keep the two communities on the island apart and claimed that Turkish Cypriots will not live with Greek Cypriots again.
