The fifth round of proximity talks is set to begin at the UN office here this afternoon with separate meetings between UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and President Clerides on the one hand and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Rauf Denktash, who arrived here earlier yesterday, on the other. De Soto described the issues under discussion as "extremely difficult" and said the parties are very far apart on some of them. He also clarified that "there is no prospect just now for face-to-face talks". In a reply letter to the Mayor of the Turkish-occupied town of Famagusta Andreas Pouyouros, on a request by the Prime Minister, the country's Foreign Minister Phil Goff said that "as a fellow Commonwealth member, New Zealand is concerned about the continuing division of Cyprus."
