UN envoy - Cyprus peace talks - Press conference

    by Maria Myles

Geneva, Nov 1 (CNA) -- The new effort to reach a settlement in Cyprus is engaging into the substance in a way that has not been done before and this will continue, the UN chief's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto told a press conference here only a few hours before the start of a new round of proximity talks.

De Soto described the issues under discussion as "extremely difficult" and said the parties are very far apart on some of them. He also clarified that "there is no prospect just now for face-to-face talks".

    New Zealand - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Nov 1 (CNA) -- New Zealand has expressed the hope that the "latest UN initiative is leading to meaningful progress" in the Cyprus question and said that "ultimately however both sides need to make a commitment to engage in meaningful negotiations in order to reach a peaceful solution to this long- standing dispute".

In a reply letter to the Mayor of the Turkish-occupied town of Famagusta Andreas Pouyouros, on a request by the Prime Minister, the country's Foreign Minister Phil Goff said that "as a fellow Commonwealth member, New Zealand is concerned about the continuing division of Cyprus."
