    [03] Attorney General - Turkey - European Court of Human Rights

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 20 (CNA) - Today's hearing in a case of human rights violations in Cyprus by Turkey concluded the legal proceedings of the fourth inter-state application the Republic of Cyprus has filed against Turkey, at the European Court of Human Rights of the Council of Europe.

    The hearing took place without Turkey's presence. Ankara did not give the Court any reason for its absence and the 19-panel of judges, including Court president Luzius Wildhaber, considered there was no reason to adjourn the hearing. CNA/MM/RG/2000

    [04] Greek Foreign Minister - Cyprus question

    Athens, Sep 20 (CNA) - A settlement of the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions stipulating for a bizonal, bicommunal federation remains a top priority for Greece, Foreign Minister George Papandreou said here today.

    Speaking to the press after a two-hour meeting with Premier Costas Simitis on the Cyprus question and the situation in Yugoslavia, Papandreou expressed the hope the Turkish side "will understand that it must come to the table for substantive negotiations within the framework set out in UN decisions."

    [09] President Clerides - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 20 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said that the UN- led peace talks on the Cyprus problem would continue into next week, adding that he did not know when the next round would take place.

    Speaking after today's meeting with the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, which lasted for over an hour, the President said, "I don't know when we are finishing, we will be working next week".

    [10] UN Spokesman - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 20 (CNA) - Yesterday's consultations between the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, and representatives of the three guarantor powers were part of the regular briefings de Soto has with them to keep in touch with regard to Cyprus.

    The UN chief's Spokesman, Fred Eckhard, said there was nothing unusual about the meetings and refused to disclose anything about their content.
