    [01] Tourism - Increase

    Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) - Tourist arrivals in Cyprus in the first half of 2000 increased by 12.6% compared to the same period in 1999.

    According to official statistics, the total number of visitors in the first six months of 2000 reached 1.113.473 as against 988.550 in the corresponding period last year.

    [02] London - Anti-occupation gathering

    London, Jul 17 (CNA) - Cypriots living in Britain organised an anti- occupation rally in Trafalgar Square last night demanding the withdrawal of the Turkish troops occupying 37 per of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated United Nations resolutions.

    They called for the restoration of human rights in Cyprus grossly violated by the Turkish occupation troops and urged the British government to help resolve the protracted Cyprus problem.

    [03] Cyprus - Turkish warplanes - Violations

    Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) - Turkish Air Force planes violated Cyprus' airspace today. An F16 warplane flew over the occupied areas, while a transport aircraft landed at the illegal airport Ercan, in the Turkish-occupied village of Tympou.

    Defence Ministry Spokesman, Andreas Charides, told CNA that for an hour this morning "there was a violation by an F16, which entered from the north, flew over the Turkish-occupied part of the old town of Nicosia, headed towards Famagusta and exited again from the north".

    Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) -- According to the Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport, the weather forecast for Cyprus is:

    Friday and Saturday: 18/7/2000 to 19/7/2000

    Weather: Mainly fine but on Wednesday afternoon a few local isolated clouds will be developed.

    Wind: Light variable in the morning soon aftewards W'ly to NW'ly light to moderate sea breezes.

    Light W'ly to NW'ly during the evening.

    State of Sea: Slight, locally in the afternoons up to moderate.

    Temperature: Maximum 38 C inland, flactuatimg between 30 and 33 degrees Celcius
    at the coasts and mountain areas.
    
    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 20/7/2000 to 21/7/2000
    
    Weather: Mainly fine but in the afternoons a few locally isolated clouds will be
    developed, with a possibility of showers at the mountains areas.
    
    Wind: Light variable in the morning soon aftewards W'ly to NW'ly light to
    moderate fresh sea breezes.
    Light to gentle W'ly to NW'ly during the evening.
    
    State of Sea: Slight, locally in the afternoons up to moderate.
    
    Temperature: Maximum 35 C inland, flactuatimg between 29 and 31 degrees Celcius
    at the coasts and between 25 and 27 Celcius at mountain areas. Minimum betwwen
    19 and 21 Celcius.

    [05] Cyprus Parliament - "Avrupa" - OSCE

    Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) - The members of the Cyprus Delegation to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly have sent a letter to the Organisation's Representative on Freedom of the Media, Freimut Duve, asking for the OSCE's intervention to end the violent and illegal silence imposed by the Turkish occupation regime in the island's northern part on Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa".

    In their letter, the members urge Duve to "intervene in an effort to end the forcible and unlawful silence imposed against this newspaper by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's occupation regime".
